Junst Can't Get Enough

At the center of the painting is the upper body of a woman (a selfportrait of the artist). Her neck and décolleté are covered with threedimensional, brightly colored popcorn, some of which spills out of her wide open mouth. Her mouth appears almost dislocated, intensifying the impression of excessive desire. Her neonpink hair is also covered with colorful, threedimensional popcorn. The neon color is echoed in the faux fur frame. Her eyes are outlined in neon orange, creating the impression of an unusual, exaggerated eyeliner.
The work is surrounded by a double frame made of glittering stones and plush in mint/sage green and neon pink. Numerous googly eyes in different sizes and variations are attached to the plush frame. They can be interpreted as a symbol of eyerolling, a reaction from consumers when confronted with the endless cycle of overconsumption and the constant desire for “more.” The background is filled with an abstract pattern of popcorn. A barely visible circle made from transparent purple glitter pigment subtly draws attention toward the bust in the foreground.
The work explores insatiable desire and the feeling of never having enough. Popcorn not only covers the body, but fills the entire background and spills out of the mouth, as if the figure is constantly consuming it while simultaneously already overflowing with it. She is already completely covered in popcorn. This creates a cycle of consumption and excess. The more there is, the greater the desire for even more seems to become.
The transformation of a kernel into popcorn reinforces this idea: a small, seemingly insignificant kernel can, when prepared “correctly,” increase its volume many times over. Popcorn can therefore symbolically represent things that initially appear small and harmless but continue to multiply. The same can be said of cheap, unethical, or unsustainably produced goods: “One more item can’t be that bad.” Yet countless individual purchases that seem insignificant on their own can ultimately create enormous excess.
The intense colors, glitter, plush, and googly eyes reinforce this idea. Everything appears alluring, excessive, and almost seductive, while at the same time artificial and overwhelming. The work can therefore be read as an examination of a consumer society in which new stimuli and desires are constantly being created. What initially promises pleasure and satisfaction can quickly turn into a feeling of never being truly satisfied.
The almost overstretched mouth makes this desire physically visible: How much is too much? Popcorn thus transforms from a harmless snack into a symbol of consumption, excess, and a desire that continually feeds itself.
